Quantum Hybri(d)s

The basic challenge for a range of quantum enabled technologies is to identify physical systems that can be controlled by external interactions, that can maintain their quantum coherence for long times, that scale to potentially include many components, and that allow transfer (for various purposes) of quantum states over intermediate or long distances. Typically, no single quantum system meets all these requirements, and hence a concept of hybrid quantum system technologies has emerged, where the different tasks are shared among different physical components that are individually optimized for the different functions. Due to their very different spatial, temporal and energetic properties, the interfacing of such physical systems presents a big challenge. In this talk I shall review the key ideas behind some recent theoretical proposals and experiments which have already provided demonstration of hybrid quantum systems.
