Research
The overarching research goals of NCCR QSIT are to advance our fundamental understanding of quantum systems and to establish practical platforms for exploring applications in quantum computing, communication, sensing and simulation. QSIT brings together essentially all major players in the field of quantum science and technology in Switzerland. Yet there is little direct competition between the more than 40 high-profile groups in the network - we collaborate rather than compete. Indeed, central strengths of QSIT are complementarity and breadth, leading naturally to an exchange of ideas and collaborations, between theorists and experimentalists as well as between solid-state physicists and those active in atomic, molecular, and optical physics.
Since the start of QSIT, the field of quantum science and technology made rapid progress on various fronts. As a consequence, we comprehensively reorganized our research portfolio in the transition from the 1st phase (2011–2014) to the 2nd one (2015–2018). As the underlying scientific concepts gradually matured and technology-transfer efforts intensified, the revised project structure remained unchanged for the current 3rd phase (2019–2022). During that final phase of the NCCR, we focus on deepening and building on the outstanding achievements realized so far. At the same time, QSIT researchers will keep responding to significant new developments and explore novel directions as they emerge.
