Quantum technology and the ultimate limits of privacy

Renato Renner
ETH Zurich

On the face of it, privacy is not testable: if a secret message is communicated from A to B, how can we ever prove that it did not, unintentionally, and maybe through some hidden channels, also go to an unknown thirty party? Device-independent quantum cryptography is a technology that achieves exactly this. By linking privacy to Bell tests, it makes it an experimentally testable notion. In my talk, I will first briefly explain the basics of device-independent quantum cryptography, and then address the challenges that need to be overcome for an experimental realisation.
