Interaction between magnons and photons
Koji Usami
University of Tokyo, Japan
The interaction between spins and light are usually weak. One of the reasons is that at optical frequencies magnetic permeability is invariably 1 and thus the inevitable intervention of orbital degree of freedom is required to bridge spins and light.
Enhancing the spin-light coupling with optical cavities or nanophotonics are now pursuing around the world, which would be well-invested efforts since strong spin-light coupling would open a new frontier connecting photonics and spintronics.
Starting by explaining how collective spin excitations of the ordered spin system, i.e., magnons, interact with photons from the phenomenological point of view, we will report our recent activities to understand, enhance, and exploit the interaction between magnons and photons.
