Simulating open quantum systems with trapped ions

Philipp Schindler
Universität Innsbruck, Austria

Recently the field of quantum simulation has gained a lot of interest. A digital quantum simulator allows to simulate systems that show different interactions than the simulator possesses naturally. To demonstrate this, we simulate the competition between dissipative and coherent interactions of a Boson spin chain in a trapped quantum information processor. For large systems these dynamics lead to a new type of phase transitions. Furthermore the errors due to imperfect operations are analyzed and develop efficient error correction techniques are developed.
