#NCCRWomen campaign
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in Switzerland, the NCCRs introduce you to some women working in Swiss research institutes.
From Women’s Day on March 8th, to October 31st, 2021 - the 50th anniversary of the first women's vote in Switzerland - in a series of 60-second videos, aimed at young women and men of high school or undergraduate age, the NCCR women show you who they are, what they do and why they do it.

The NCCR QSIT week of the #NCCRWomen campaign
From March 15th to March 19th, five of the QSIT INSPIRE Master and Postdoc awardees shared what a day in the life of a scientist looks like.
March 15th Giulia Zheng
March 16th Begoña Abad
March 17th Chiara Decaroli
March 18th Nadine Leisgang
March 19th Anna Morales
"Doing research means being in a community that joins brains to broaden the horizon of human knowledge."Giulia Zheng
Giulia Zheng is currently working as a PhD student in the Nanophysics group (Ensslin group) at ETHZ. Giulia did her master thesis in the very same group and received the QSIT INSPIRE Master Award in 2018.
She does experiments with nanostructures in two dimensional materials to observe quantum transport phenomena.
"I love science because every day is a new adventure, and we have the opportunity to learn and discover new things about the world around us!"Begoña Abad
Begoña Abad, currently working as a Postdoc in the Nanophononics group (Zardo group) at Uni Basel, was awarded the INSPIRE Postdoc Awardee in 2020.
Begoña is characterizing the properties of ultra-small materials with the help of lasers.
"I am truly fascinated by the world of quantum physics. It feels so far away from our reality, and yet it is its fabric.”Chiara Decaroli
Chiara Decaroli is currently working as a PhD student in the Trapped Ion Quantum Information Group (Home group) at ETHZ. Chiara did her master thesis in the Condensed Matter Theory and Metamaterials group (Huber group) at ETHZ and received the INSPIRE Master Award in 2016. She is developing some of the building blocks for quantum computers - ion traps. These allow her to manipulate individual ions and perform quantum operations.
“Any new structure and any new experiment requires originality and creativity, as does any great work of art."Nadine Leisgang
Nadine Leisgang is currently working as a PhD student in the Nano-Photonics Group (Warburton group) at Uni Basel. Nadine did her master thesis in the very same group and received the QSIT INSPIRE Master Award in 2016. She is interested in the opto-electronic properties of novel materials on the nanometre scale.
“Choose your path. Stick to it, or change it. Do whatever you enjoy but don’t let anyone choose for you.”Anna Morales
Anna Morales did her master thesis in the Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials (Fontcuberta group) at EPFL and received the INSPIRE Master Award in 2018. After finishing her master, Anna continued her academic career as a PhD student in The Laboratory of Construction Materials at EPFL. There she studies the properties of cement in order to tune its production to lower the CO2 emissions from this industry.
The INSPIRE Potentials Master internship Award aims at attracting excellent female students who will conduct their Master thesis in a laboratory belonging to the NCCR QSIT network. In order to keep outstanding female scientists and at the same time substantiate their excellence in science, thereby supporting them in their academic career, NCCR QSIT launched as well an INSPIRE award for postdocs. The grants scheme thus aims to increase the number of women researchers in research fields related to the partaking laboratories.
