Crystalline Microresonators
In the external page Kippenberg group at EPFL, we want to take the conceptually simple technology of optical microresonators from the lab and package them for both industrial and academic customers.
The optical microresonator based reference cavity proposed here is based on an optical whispering gallery mode that is confined in the circumference of a cylindrically shaped microresonator.
qstarter awards winner Dr. John Jost is building sucessfully the start-up external page MicroR systems on this technology.
Key specifications:
- Free spectral range: > 10 GHz
- Finesse: > 106
- Quality factors of > 1010
- Fractional Frequency stability: 6 x 10-14 at 0.1 s
The goal is to offer a product that meets specifications that cannot be filled by conventional reference cavities while maintaining sufficiently high performance standards to meet most demanding applications.
A packaged device will also enable more advanced applications and products ranging from optical frequency combs, spectroscopy to low noise microwave generation.
